The department grapevine breeding focuses on breeding and selection of vine varieties, the vine per se, the health status of vines and on cultivation of grapevines.

Our objectives include the improvement of genetic traits of vines and of plant health, the improvement of sustainable production methods and the strengthening of the range of characteristic high-quality selections of wines. New grapevine varieties such as Roesler, Rathay, Donauriesling, Blütenmuskateller, and just recently Donauveltliner and Pinot nova have been developed in the frame of this work. In addition the department fulfils its duties as national office for grapevine varieties (Sortenamt) and deals with the conservation and documentation of genetic resources for vine.
