Whether milk, lemonade or beer - the reusable bottle is currently experiencing a revival. In comparison, there are hardly any reusable bottles for wine. This is despite the fact that wine would be predestined for a reusable system due to the high market share of domestic wines in Austria.
A recently published study on CO₂ emissions in viticulture revealed the high proportion of packaging in the total emissions of wineries.
The main culprit here is the disposable glass bottle, which is diligently collected but requires large quantities of natural gas to melt down.
The wide variety of bottle types used for bottling wine makes the introduction of a standardised reusable system a major challenge.
A group of experts in recycling management, packaging and reusable systems, viticulture and the wine trade is now tackling this challenge, with the aim of achieving positive ecological effects (waste avoidance, resource conservation, CO2 reduction) and encouraging the wine industry to switch to sustainable reusable solutions.
